Living according to your ideals is easier said than done. Look at me – my interest in growing my own food has manifested itself in a single tomato I am irrationally unwilling to pick and a series of perished herb plants. I want to be the person with a thriving veggie garden, but I'm sadly lacking the space and know-how. Lucky for me and other Angelenos, the husband and wife team of Lucas Brower and Jesse Kamm offer an easy and affordable solution - Home Grow Micro Farms.

I was late to the game of discovering the work of activist, writer, educator, and publisher Jen Angel. I first saw her speak in 2008 at Bluestocking Bookstore in New York City's Lower East Side, touting her then-newly released booklet Becoming the Media: A Critical History Of Clamor Magazine. The paperback memoir reads as a how-to and why-to for aspiring independent publishers, based on Jen's experiences founding, editing, and managing the now out-of-print Clamour Magazine.

It’s not often that a development company is talked of fondly.  They have a history of being the bad guys in everything from made-for-TV movies to real life, but in the last few years Seawall Development Company has made its mark as a developer actively seeking to do good by the community and environment.

The space houses photo studios, professional wood & metal shops, a fully loaded digital media lab, office space, and an interdisciplinary art education program. Awhile back, I decided to stitch up some throw pillows. Armed with the free pattern I found online, I headed to a JoAnn’s Fabrics in search of cheap pillow stuffing. A few overworked employees were struggling through a growing line of customers, so I wandered fruitlessly around the store for a while. When I finally found the pillow stuffing, I took a look at their fabric section - a tired hodgepodge under a sign warning something about formaldehyde and cancer.  So I hopped in my car and drove across town to Sew LA.

Submitted by Kristen Bean. As a child, I often sat at the dinner table and listened to my mother, a special education teacher, talk excitedly about how her students overcame unfathomable barriers. Although I didn’t realize it at the time, my mother’s stories of challenging her students to overcome difficulties shaped my ambitions to become an advocate and develop a nonprofit organization for people with disabilities. Both my mother and I firmly believe that everyone can learn.

If you're like me, starting a new business can mean acquiring a multitude of new skills. Enough so that I keep circling back to the same question: Should I go to grad school? For many people thinking of striking out on their own, graduate school may be a perfect place to sharpen business acumen, network, or fine-tune a business idea. And for those who aren't finding work right now anyway, returning to school may actually work out in their favor. But for those weighing the loss of present income against future gains, it can be a tough decision.
